How Interior Design Affects Our Wellbeing

With most of our time spent indoors, the space we live in plays a significant role in shaping how we behave and how we feel.

Interior design is more than just creating aesthetically pleasing spaces; it impacts our mood and influences productivity and well-being.

This blog will explore how various elements of interior spaces can influence how we live, offering insights and tips on creating environments that enhance our quality of life.

1. Avoid clutter and maintain a clean space

I can’t emphasize this enough. It’s very important to create simple habits that will help you to avoid clutter and mess.

  • Getting rid of the items you don't use does not make your life better or you don’t love.

  • Develop small rituals to keep your house clean and organized. A few minutes in the morning and a few more in the evenings every day can have a huge impact.

*** Have you ever noticed how a clean and tidy space activates social norms, encouraging people to do what is expected of them?

2. The Impact of Space Layout and Flow

In my opinion, good design is about planning, understanding who lives in that space, and how they function in it.

The goal is to create spaces that are ideal for people to eat, talk, relax, work, play, be together, or be alone. A balance of formality and casualty helps.

The space should be carefully planned to help us achieve that feeling and function.

A designer can help you with the furniture layout, proportions, sizes of furniture and distances between them.

A well-organized and spacious layout can reduce stress and increase a sense of calm. The right layout can bring people together, making the ordinary special.

3. Lighting and Mood

Exploring the natural light and complementing it with artificial lighting is key.

  • Natural Light: Exposure to natural light can improve mood, boost productivity, and regulate our circadian rhythms. Strategies that maximize natural light can have significant positive effects on well-being.

  • Artificial Lighting: The type of artificial lighting used can alter the ambiance of a space. I like to combine direct and indirect lights. Warm lighting is generally relaxing; I usually recommend LED lights with temperatures of 2700K -3000K. Recessed lights should be carefully placed and often on a dimmer.

4. Furniture selection

  • Comfort and Functionality: good quality furniture supports physical health and can prevent discomfort and injuries. Comfortable furniture also promotes relaxation and a sense of well-being.

  • Finishes: combining the right materials, colours, and different textures can create a tactile experience that will bring warmth and coziness to the space.

5. Personalization and Identity

  • Expressing Individuality: Personalizing spaces with artwork that “speaks to you,” adding layers with rugs, wallpaper, window treatments, and incorporating plants, objects, and accessories can create a sense of ownership and belonging.

*** The designer will help you combine your style in a cohesive way.

Interior spaces can have a huge impact on how we act or feel; they influence our emotions and behaviours. By understanding and thoughtfully designing these spaces, we can create interiors that enhance our well-being, productivity, and overall quality of life. Whether it's through the use of colour, lighting, layout, or incorporating natural elements, the design choices we make can have a profound impact on how we feel and act within those spaces.
